Number fact fluency is a critical foundation for mathematical learning, yet schools often take varied approaches to how fluency is taught and supported across grade levels. This online professional learning session is designed to help K–6 educators develop a shared, research-informed understanding of mathematical fluency and begin aligning practices across classrooms.

The session will open with a focused overview of effective number fact instruction. John SanGiovanni will address common myths and misconceptions about fluency, clarify what it truly means to be fluent, and share key principles that support students in developing efficient, flexible, and accurate number thinking. This portion of the session is grounded in research and practical classroom experience and draws on John’s work around Figuring Out Fluency.

The session will then turn to questions raised by the school community, including the role of worksheets and drill-style practice, the balance between in-class instruction and homework, and the importance of a consistent approach across grades. Participants will also explore how a shared plan might be developed, how success could be measured, and how expectations can be clearly articulated from Kindergarten through Grade 6.

The webinar will conclude by positioning participants to take next steps within their own school contexts. The shared research, language, and ideas from the session are intended to support teams as they continue their work toward developing a common vision and coherent approach to mathematics instruction.
