This two-part series invites educators to reconsider the role of the whole-class novel study and rethink how reading is experienced in today’s classrooms. Together, we will explore how whole-class texts can be used intentionally to model essential reading strategies, build shared experiences, and establish the foundation for deeper thinking. From there, we will consider how to gradually release responsibility to students, supporting them as they independently apply these strategies while navigating increasingly complex texts through book clubs and self-selected what they read.

Educators will leave with:

  • A deeper understanding of how to position the whole-class novel as a tool for modeling and skill-building
  • Strategies for gradually releasing responsibility to support independent, strategic readers
  • Approaches and practical steps to increase reading volume through book clubs and independent reading
  • Ideas for fostering strong reading identities through meaningful text selection and student agency
