Teaching writing and analytical thought is more important than ever in the face of wider AI adoption and misuse, and the tools to help students understand are nearer than we think. In this (75 minute) session, we will consider the task of writing in the secondary ELA classroom. Together, we will discuss and deconstruct the many aspects of the English Language Arts 30-1 Scoring guide, as well as its limits and the expectations that surround it. Then, we will look at how English teachers can use these scoring categories and their own practical knowledge to build scaffolds that support student learning and improvement at every level of High School ELA.
